The end is nigh. And while blood may not flood the streets and no one will witness the four horsemen galloping around the corner of 57th and Park, things are about to change. A quick click over to YouTube to see how that video you made is performing, or a stopover to blog on Blogger in between meetings will become a thing of the past. But is that a good thing?

Toy company Hasbro is under attack. Hundreds of thousands of malicious emails. Vicious, stinging blog posts. Vitriolic hell-bent hackers. Yes, the company known for its fun family games and entertainments is being beaten down worse than a Whack-A-Mole. And it's all because of... Scrabble?

Journalists write. They don’t design.
With newspapers nationwide suffering from lost advertising, revenue, and market share, how can we imagine a solution that can breathe new life into these failing brands? The start of some of my thinking is of the role designers may have in saving the newspaper. A new breed I am calling the "designalist".

I think the term branding gets abused. So I’ve been playing with some definitions. Interested to get feedback on “brand experience” v. “branding” in regards to online marketing. Let’s see if I can break that down after the jump….

'm happy to announce that DMD has taken on, as a pro bono assignment,

Consumer decisions on sustainability; corporate investment in sustainability. Advertising clutter. DVR usage. Who really clicks on ads? Bloggers are a nice demographic, but not all the next generation is as online savvy as you think. Fine out more in the metrics round-up.

I did not attend Interaction 08 conference, but luckily they posted all the videos. I've been enjoying watching these on planes and trains, and discovered that boring users may inspire action, pacing in storytelling can create engagement, and that users don't want to click. But you have to click here if you want to see my takeaways and the videos.

Lots will, including
Google's response well analyzed
here and
here, been said about this proposed hostile bid (although I found
Yahoo’s FAQ rather amusing in its ability to lay out questions and provide no answers.) I believe, however, that there is a side that is being overlooked: a new market for branding online.

This little thing might change everything
How often do I hear on the street "Hey! Newspapers are dead! Magazines are finished! Kaput to the printed word and all advertisements that go along with it!"? Hearing this fills me with rage. Yes. Print is dead. Right. So why do I work in integrated marketing? That's when I tell the coffee cart guy on the corner to just give me my bearclaw and keep his opinions on media to himself.
But wait! Hold the phones. Is print really dead? Or is it a gateway to a NEW DIMENSION? I'm not high off my bearclaw, I'm just excited. What am I talking about? Let's just say it starts with Google...

I first learned of the band
The Arcade Fire through my former college roommate and co-DJ. I would play bubble gum pop like N*Sync and pre-tragedy Britney (hey, it got us skyhigh Allentown ratings!) and Aaron would play indy music I had never, ever heard of. Well, I haven't thought of the Fire in some time, but, because of their web genius, they are suddenly on my radar once more...

I was extremely late in getting on the MySpace bandwagon. My friends descended upon the growing social network in troves. Adding photos, leaving comments, and telling me all the fun I was missing out on. Finally I relented (not for any reason but to gain access to friends' photos). How smart of MySpace to force you to create a profile in order to see those of others!
But I never liked MySpace...

A truly fascinating read in this month's
Harvard Design Magazine arguing for architecture to embrace more mass production and step away from custom design. I found the read exhilarating as it embraced some of today's intriguing ideas: rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and Building Information Management (BIM). I actually found the article through
Tree Hugger which gets very excited
about the idea of "printing buildings" which would much better control the use and removal of building products....
