Recently, the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt bestowed its Lifetime Achievement Award to Charles Harrison, an industrial designer whom I’ve never heard of until I came across the article in Smithsonian’s monthly publication. When I started reading the designer’s achievements over a career that spanned half a century, I was impressed and humbled by the breadth of his output.

Recently, I went to the newly renovated Museum of Arts and Design (at its new home on Columbus Circle) to see the new exhibition: Second Lives - Remixing the Ordinary. I must admit, part of the reason I went in the first place was to check out the museum’s much buzzed-about architecture. With a new textured façade of glazed tile and glass, offering an expansive vista of Columbus Circle and Central Park, the new building weaves together the museum environment and the street life of the surrounding neighborhood into a seamless, visceral experience.
