Can a cheap, open source, green computer take the market?

Posted by Rowland Hobbs on November 11 at 7:32 PM
Wal Mart has sold out of the under $200 (not including monitor) computer. It is green. Its operating system is open source based on Ubuntu (Linux), but with all the Google tools already installed (see screen shots here and video demo here).

Price is important. This comes fully functional with all the office (like) goodies, and the speed (1.5 ghz) isn't bad either. The look and feel is super clean, like Apple OS, and easy to use. Let's not forget this being sold first through Wal-Mart (it's sold out online, but apparently not in the stores).

I could see something like this taking significant market share. More and more necessities strictly ASP, online, based (every Google ap you can think of, and then some), web 2.0 is all online, only leaving music as a main function that becomes more local. However, you may choose to spend more on your iPod that your Internet terminal because that's where you can make a luxury statement through an accessory.
