Finding Gems at the Armory Art Show

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on March 6 at 12:21 PM I am not an expert on art though I do have a fascination with it. The majority of my knowledge is rooted in its history, and as I do not have a place to put the pieces I admire, I had little experience attending a show of current (living) artists.

My curiosity brought me to the Armory Art Show at Pier 92 and 94 on the west side of New York this weekend. For an art fair, it was surprisingly structured. There were aisles, informal booths, and it looked much more formal than I had imagined. I wanted gritty, arty, struggling but alas even art is a business it seems.

Starting the Day, and Year, with Celebration

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on January 29 at 12:21 PM Tracing its fifty year history through video interviews and delightfully kitschy takes on office design through the ages, Contract magazine paused to celebrate the interiors industry with some 800 people who attended the Interiors Awards in New York City on January 29. It was early morning breakfast event that highlighted the best interior projects in a variety of sectors like corporate, healthcare and education design.

Great Start to a New Decade

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on January 21 at 3:21 AM Call us superstitious but we think that a great start to 2010 is a sign of fantastic things to come. Yes, there is optimism in the air.

And we hope we didn't just jinx it.

After a very merry holiday break, DMD Insight PR team has reunited (some traveled near, others far) and hit the ground running in the New Year. We’re thrilled by the pick up our clients received in 2009, and have entered 2010 with new ideas and excitement to ensure that momentum continues.

The Ultimate Shortlist

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on December 8 at 9:21 AM Interior Design magazine hosted the selection of new products and projects on Dec. 3.

While the crowd was still excited about the Hall of Fame dinner from the night before, hundreds packed the theatre in the Guggenheim to celebrate the best new products and projects of 2009. The competition was stiff, too.

Interior Design’s Hall of Fame Celebrates 25 Years

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on December 3 at 2:21 AM The design industry came out in full force for the Interior Design’s Hall of Fame event at the Waldorf Astoria last night, Dec. 2. Nearly 1,200 joined in the celebration—cocktail parties, dinner and even some dancing.

As a first timer, it was exciting to see a room filled with some of the most glamorous in interior design. The Waldorf Astoria was all decked out in its holiday gear as well.

Inductees Tony Chi, tonychi and associates; Vladimir Kagan, The Vladimir Kagan Design Group; Nick Luzietti, VOA Associates; Leo Marmol & Ron Radziner, Marmol Radziner + Associates took their time at the podium and thanked their staff, families and took a few extra minutes to show us some personality.

Nick Luzietti, a crowd favorite, even managed to change costumes during his acceptance speech.

For the first time, a firm was inducted as Gensler was presented with a 25th Anniversary Special Award.

Check back tomorrow for a report from Interior Design’s Best of Year Awards tonight!

Greenbuild: The Momentum is Building

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on November 18 at 12:21 PM Growth. It was the buzzword at last week’s Greenbuild and as someone who attends multiple A+D events a year, it’s the first time that I’ve heard it associated with a tradeshow in 2009.

Perhaps it is the niche market, federal money, or relevance of sustainable design but Greenbuild’s numbers were up this year. The conference, which is less than a decade old, celebrated a much-quoted 30,000 visitors.

My Life on the ‘Dark Side’

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on August 3 at 4:00 AM As an editor, I always wondered how PR people worked. There are tons of crude names for PR, but ‘PR person’ was my generic catchall for someone who stood between me and the photo that I needed to go to press.

My exposure to PR came as editor of boutique DESIGN, a hospitality interior design magazine that I launched for Boutique Media Group in 2005.

As of last week, I am now working on the PR side here at DMD Insight in New York. And I’m learning that, as with most things, there’s a lot more to it than it seems.

Did LEED kill green design?

Posted by Melanie Bender on July 15 at 3:54 PM The USGBC's LEED green building rating system has been embraced as the golden-child of architectural mega-firms and corporate real estate developers, alike.  But has this dummed-down approach to green design done more harm than good?

Rapid Prototyping for Architecture and the culture of "making things"

Posted by Rowland Hobbs on October 21 at 8:07 PM A truly fascinating read in this month's Harvard Design Magazine arguing for architecture to embrace more mass production and step away from custom design. I found the read exhilarating as it embraced some of today's intriguing ideas: rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and Building Information Management (BIM). I actually found the article through Tree Hugger which gets very excited about the idea of "printing buildings" which would much better control the use and removal of building products....
