It takes a lot of courage to create something from scratch. Melanie Bender, VP,
DMD Lab, knows this because she's done it. When she launched the pro bono project at DMD Insight last year, she had no idea that it would quickly develop into an entity of its own.
Fresh off of a coveted
SABRE Award nomination, Melanie reflects on Lab’s past, present and future, and how the company that was spawned from her passion for fashion can help labels brave the new world of commerce with smart partnerships.

We’ve talked about great design, what it means and how it takes shape. We’ve talked about adding the verbal to the visual and the impact there. So let’s talk communicating great design with words only.

Defining design certainly varies, but from our commentators on yesterday's "Let's Talk Design I", it keeps coming back to making that connection – emotional or rational.
Now what happens when we add words?

At DMD Insight, social media is part of our everyday lives and part of many of our clients’ everyday communications efforts. Yet for some industries, it is a medium yet tested, and with potential that has not yet been tapped. Take Oil & Gas for example…

Tracing its fifty year history through video interviews and delightfully kitschy takes on office design through the ages, Contract magazine paused to celebrate the interiors industry with some 800 people who attended the Interiors Awards in New York City on January 29. It was early morning breakfast event that highlighted the best interior projects in a variety of sectors like corporate, healthcare and education design.

Call us superstitious but we think that a great start to 2010 is a sign of fantastic things to come. Yes, there is optimism in the air.
And we hope we didn't just jinx it.
After a very merry holiday break, DMD Insight PR team has reunited (some traveled near, others far) and hit the ground running in the New Year. We’re thrilled by the pick up our clients received in 2009, and have entered 2010 with new ideas and excitement to ensure that momentum continues.

Interior Design magazine hosted the selection of new products and projects on Dec. 3.
While the crowd was still excited about the Hall of Fame dinner from the night before, hundreds packed the theatre in the Guggenheim to celebrate the best new products and projects of 2009. The competition was stiff, too.

The design industry came out in full force for the Interior Design’s Hall of Fame event at the Waldorf Astoria last night, Dec. 2. Nearly 1,200 joined in the celebration—cocktail parties, dinner and even some dancing.
As a first timer, it was exciting to see a room filled with some of the most glamorous in interior design. The Waldorf Astoria was all decked out in its holiday gear as well.
Inductees Tony Chi, tonychi and associates; Vladimir Kagan, The Vladimir Kagan Design Group; Nick Luzietti, VOA Associates; Leo Marmol & Ron Radziner, Marmol Radziner + Associates took their time at the podium and thanked their staff, families and took a few extra minutes to show us some personality.
Nick Luzietti, a crowd favorite, even managed to change costumes during his acceptance speech.
For the first time, a firm was inducted as Gensler was presented with a 25th Anniversary Special Award.

Growth. It was the buzzword at last week’s Greenbuild and as someone who attends multiple A+D events a year, it’s the first time that I’ve heard it associated with a tradeshow in 2009.
Perhaps it is the niche market, federal money, or relevance of sustainable design but Greenbuild’s numbers were up this year. The conference, which is less than a decade old, celebrated a much-quoted 30,000 visitors.

Four days of design events in London brought more diversity than I ever could have expected from such an overdose of interiors. The events were part of London Design Festival Week, an annual September showing that introduces the world to the latest British design ideas. Of course high-end international exhibitors partake as well. Each event, 100% Design, Tent London, The Dock, Focus and Decorex all brought different ideas and voices to the table.

As an editor, I always wondered how PR people worked. There are tons of crude names for PR, but ‘PR person’ was my generic catchall for someone who stood between me and the photo that I needed to go to press.
My exposure to PR came as editor of
boutique DESIGN, a hospitality interior design magazine that I launched for Boutique Media Group in 2005.
As of last week, I am now working on the PR side here at DMD Insight in New York. And I’m learning that, as with most things, there’s a lot more to it than it seems.
