How do you translate Brooklyn – a cultural phenomenon and perhaps the most copied location in the world (bold, I know) – and take that style into home furnishings?
BKLYN Designs sought out a cross section of BKLYN’s top talent and put it on display in St. Ann’s Warehouse.
With little sense of irony, these designs spoke to sophistication and good old-fashioned green building. The kids from the famous borough really ramped it up this year. And the streets of DUMBO were filled with onlookers too.

I prefer architecture that complements its surrounding—be it hills, valleys, beaches or skyscrapers. It shouldn't borrow too much from it. My biggest pet peeve in architecture is when architects try to take credit for the sky.

I am not an expert on art though I do have a fascination with it. The majority of my knowledge is rooted in its history, and as I do not have a place to put the pieces I admire, I had little experience attending a show of current (living) artists.
My curiosity brought me to the Armory Art Show at Pier 92 and 94 on the west side of New York this weekend. For an art fair, it was surprisingly structured. There were aisles, informal booths, and it looked much more formal than I had imagined. I wanted gritty, arty, struggling but alas even art is a business it seems.

Museums have traditionally used their websites as the reflection of their brick and mortar space, where they housed an abridged version of the pieces or the information that can be found inside their buildings. However, there is a trend for greater willingness by museums to become online resources.

Evidently the pulse is back.

What can you do with your collection given limited resources? Many museums today are reevaluating and reinterpreting pieces in their collections when funds are tight to fund expensive traveling exhibitions.

Growth. It was the buzzword at last week’s Greenbuild and as someone who attends multiple A+D events a year, it’s the first time that I’ve heard it associated with a tradeshow in 2009.
Perhaps it is the niche market, federal money, or relevance of sustainable design but Greenbuild’s numbers were up this year. The conference, which is less than a decade old, celebrated a much-quoted 30,000 visitors.

Four days of design events in London brought more diversity than I ever could have expected from such an overdose of interiors. The events were part of London Design Festival Week, an annual September showing that introduces the world to the latest British design ideas. Of course high-end international exhibitors partake as well. Each event, 100% Design, Tent London, The Dock, Focus and Decorex all brought different ideas and voices to the table.

Recently, I went to the newly renovated Museum of Arts and Design (at its new home on Columbus Circle) to see the new exhibition: Second Lives - Remixing the Ordinary. I must admit, part of the reason I went in the first place was to check out the museum’s much buzzed-about architecture. With a new textured façade of glazed tile and glass, offering an expansive vista of Columbus Circle and Central Park, the new building weaves together the museum environment and the street life of the surrounding neighborhood into a seamless, visceral experience.
