Meet Melanie Bender, Brainchild Behind DMD Lab, a Fashion-Forward Micro-Agency with Fresh Ideas

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on April 13 at 11:33 AM It takes a lot of courage to create something from scratch. Melanie Bender, VP, DMD Lab, knows this because she's done it. When she launched the pro bono project at DMD Insight last year, she had no idea that it would quickly develop into an entity of its own.

Fresh off of a coveted SABRE Award nomination, Melanie reflects on Lab’s past, present and future, and how the company that was spawned from her passion for fashion can help labels brave the new world of commerce with smart partnerships.

Let’s Talk Design II

Posted by Gina Miller on February 17 at 12:00 AM Defining design certainly varies, but from our commentators on yesterday's "Let's Talk Design I", it keeps coming back to making that connection – emotional or rational.

Now what happens when we add words?

Greenbuild: The Momentum is Building

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on November 18 at 12:21 PM Growth. It was the buzzword at last week’s Greenbuild and as someone who attends multiple A+D events a year, it’s the first time that I’ve heard it associated with a tradeshow in 2009.

Perhaps it is the niche market, federal money, or relevance of sustainable design but Greenbuild’s numbers were up this year. The conference, which is less than a decade old, celebrated a much-quoted 30,000 visitors.

My Life on the ‘Dark Side’

Posted by Rebecca Goldberg on August 3 at 4:00 AM As an editor, I always wondered how PR people worked. There are tons of crude names for PR, but ‘PR person’ was my generic catchall for someone who stood between me and the photo that I needed to go to press.

My exposure to PR came as editor of boutique DESIGN, a hospitality interior design magazine that I launched for Boutique Media Group in 2005.

As of last week, I am now working on the PR side here at DMD Insight in New York. And I’m learning that, as with most things, there’s a lot more to it than it seems.

Designers Can Save The Newspaper

Posted by Rowland Hobbs on July 28 at 4:00 PM Journalists write. They don’t design.

With newspapers nationwide suffering from lost advertising, revenue, and market share, how can we imagine a solution that can breathe new life into these failing brands? The start of some of my thinking is of the role designers may have in saving the newspaper. A new breed I am calling the "designalist".

Beep! Beep! Who's got the keys to the....zero-emission car?

Posted by Rowland Hobbs on May 5 at 7:29 AM I'm obsessed with cars. As a kid I would memorize everything about them. I think it surprised my family, as my eyesight percluded my chances of driving.  Nonetheless, I would sketch new dashboard designs, quiz car dealers on MPG and horsepower, and drive the rest of my family—who honestly didn’t care as much about cars—a bit crazy. So, it is with some childlike glee I can tell you about two new cars, and one concept car that are attempting to finally, truly decrease emissions.

Rapid Prototyping for Architecture and the culture of "making things"

Posted by Rowland Hobbs on October 21 at 8:07 PM A truly fascinating read in this month's Harvard Design Magazine arguing for architecture to embrace more mass production and step away from custom design. I found the read exhilarating as it embraced some of today's intriguing ideas: rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and Building Information Management (BIM). I actually found the article through Tree Hugger which gets very excited about the idea of "printing buildings" which would much better control the use and removal of building products....
